The last bowl win for the Irish came against the team they’ll face again in the 2017 Citrus Bowl, LSU. Just two seasons prior to this win over LSU, Notre Dame was convincingly defeated by Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship Game.

Then sophomore Malik Zaire commanded the Notre Dame offense. Zaire tossed one touchdown pass to wide receiver Will Fuller and he also rushed for another. A deep backfield, featuring running backs like C.J. Prosise and Tarean Folston, also got the Irish in the end zone twice.

The hardest part of this game was stopping star LSU running back Leonard Fournette. As a team, LSU still managed 285 rushing yards and two scores. Fournette also returned a kickoff back for a 100-yard touchdown.

If Notre Dame can find the same type of magic they had in the 2014 Music City Bowl, a win over LSU could be on the horizon. Kelly does not have a bowl win with the Irish since the victory in this contest. The three-point win fits among the tightest margins of victory in bowl games for Notre Dame.
