Herm Edwards has accepted the head coaching job with Arizona State football. This has the makings of a train wreck from the start.

After firing Todd Graham a day after the regular season concluded, after a win over the rival Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State was searching for a new direction. Athletic director Ray Anderson seemed to focus on one coach and sure enough on Monday, the Sun Devils made it official. Herm Edwards is now the 24th head coach in Sun Devil history.

This season’s coaching carousel has been interesting to watch. From big moves like Jimbo Fisher getting a huge deal at Texas A&M to the absolute dumpster fire mess at Tennessee, it has been a year to remember in coaching searches. The hiring of Herm Edwards is the latest the bunch.  The official press release from the university is bizarre and then the introductory press conference was even weirder with this exchange.

Graham had a 46-31 record in six seasons in Tempe, going 2-2 in bowl games and winning one Pac-12 South division title in 2013. He also had two back to back 10 win seasons. From all accounts, he ran a clean program, his players liked him and he was invested. He was fired after being moderately successful on the field. Now Anderson is taking a big gamble on the hiring of Edwards.
