Arizona State Football: 3 reasons Herm Edwards is a bad fit
By Shane Lunnen
3. Edwards’ head coaching record
This is one of the more obvious reasons this is a bad move. Herm Edwards does not have a good coaching track record.
In the NFL, as head coach of the New Year Jets from 2001 to 2005 and of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006 to 2008, Edwards had a record well below .500. He was 54-74 in his eight seasons and had a 2-4 playoff record. Only once did he win a division title, a 9-7 first place finish in the AFC East in 2002. Maybe Arizona State is just hoping for press conferences like this one from the same year.
Given his record, the Arizona State athletic department seems to think Edwards can now suddenly compete at the college level in the Pac-12 with USC back to being a powerhouse and Washington, Stanford and Washington State looking good. Throw in UCLA hiring Chip Kelly to resurrect their program and you have to say good luck to the Sun Devils. It will be a very tough to win in the conference.
It is head scratching to think they traded a coach who was 15 games over .500 for one 20 games under. Granted it is tough to compare the NFL to the college game, however it brings us to our next point.
