When you are the likely Heisman winner, it is pretty easy to see why you would also be the offensive MVP for your team. Who is it for Oklahoma football?

Baker Mayfield dominated on the field this year for Oklahoma football, racking up yards and touchdowns aplenty.

The 6-1 senior quarterback from Austin, Texas enters the College Football Playoff with 41 touchdowns and 4,340 yards. Mayfield has completed 262 of 369 passes, averaging almost 12 yards per attempt and sporting a quarterback rating of 203.8.

All of those numbers are career highs for the former Texas Tech signal-caller, along with a career-low five interceptions.

Mayfield left Texas Tech following the 2013 season, sitting out the following year before taking over at Oklahoma. He hasn’t missed a beat over the last three years, throwing 117 touchdown passes.

On the season, Mayfield ranks second in passing yards behind in-state rival Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State. His 11.8 yards per attempt leads the nation, while his 41 touchdown passes are second to Missouri’s Drew Lock.

Of those that have thrown at least 30 touchdowns, Mayfield has the fewest interceptions, throwing a pick every 74 attempts.

Mayfield threw for 300 yards seven times this year, including a high of 598 in a 62-52 victory in Bedlam over the Cowboys. He completed 24-of-36 that game, throwing five touchdowns.

On the ground, Mayfield has scored five more touchdowns, gaining positive yards in nine games, including a high of 69 vs. Kansas State.

Even if Mayfield’s numbers didn’t look like they come from a video game season, he would still be the offensive most valuable player for the Sooners because of his leadership. The fiery leader showed that in both positive and negative light, but there was never a doubt who each Oklahoma player looked to when the going got tough and a play needed to be made.
