New Year’s Day 1940 was the sight of the most recent National Championship for Texas A&M. The Aggies finished as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation at the conclusion of the 1939 college football season, good enough to claim the program’s third National Championship.

Texas A&M running back John Kimbrough scored both touchdowns for the Aggies on the way to a 14-13 victory over the Tulane Green Wave. The fact that the Aggies defeated No. 5 Tulane at the home stadium of the Green Wave in New Orleans, La.

There was an attendance of 73,000 at the 1940 Sugar Bowl, the best game for the Aggies in the history of the program. And, it was all because of one blocked extra point that allowed the Aggies the one point victory over the Green Wave.

Texas A&M is a blue blood program in college football. It’s been a while since the Aggies claimed a National Championship. That does not take away from all the success Texas A&M has in postseason play with 17 bowl wins in 38 games.
