Oklahoma football honors Heisman winners with statues in what they call Heisman Park along Jenkins Avenue in Norman. Will Baker Mayfield be next?

If Baker Mayfield, the odds-on favorite to hoist the award this Saturday, wins, students of the university want the statue to remember a key moment in the season for both the Sooners and Mayfield.

Back in September, Oklahoma rocked Ohio State in a Top-5 meeting, with Mayfield throwing for 386 yards and three touchdowns in the 31-16 victory in Columbus, Ohio.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Mayfield grabbed an over-sized OU flag and promptly stuck it in the middle of the field. The move was a way for Mayfield to mock the “Dotting of the I” tradition by the Ohio State band in pregame ceremonies.

So far, the petition has been signed by over 4,000 fans with a goal set of 5,000 by Seth Truitt.

Truitt wrote on the petition site

"OU Daily student newspaper ran an article on it, and I was also reached out by the Norman Transcript for an interview. Finally, a student government representative is assisting by encouraging SGA to pass a formal resolution to the OU administration. Now that this cause is gaining traction, our goal is simple. Get as many signatures as possible."

Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma after walking on with Texas Tech in 2013. He sat out a season and has since thrown for at least 3,000 yards each of the past three years, including 4,340 and 41 touchdowns this season to move to the top of the Heisman charts.

Oklahoma and Mayfield will take on Georgia on New Year’s Day in the first College Football Playoff at the Rose Bowl. Before then he could have a new trophy in his collection, will he add a championship and a statue before this season is through?
