The nation’s leader in receiving touchdowns is also the star of the West Virginia football offense in junior David Sills V.

West Virginia football got off to a better start this year than they finished. Yet, the Mountaineers are about to participate in the fourth consecutive postseason game under head coach Dana Holgorsen. Much of the reason for any West Virginia success this year came from sophomore quarterback Will Grier and junior wide receiver David Sills V.

Grier got injured in West Virginia’s loss to the Texas Longhorns, by having a nasty dislocation of his finger while diving for the pylon. After the injury to Grier Sills V’s production did dip some. However, that does not take away from the great 2017 campaign he had.

The Mountaineers take on the Utah Utes in the Cactus Bowl, which gives Sills V a chance to get over 1,000 receiving yards on the season. However, Sills V did finish with 980 receiving yards, on 80 catches, with 18 touchdowns. His 18 touchdowns were good for the nation’s lead after the end of the regular season.

The entire West Virginia offense had an underrated balance between the passing and running game. Senior Justin Crawford and sophomore Kennedy McKoy formed a dynamic duo of running backs for the Mountaineers. Moreover, Sills V, Gary Jennings, Ka’Raun White, and Marcus Simms, formed one of the best receiving corps in the nation.

Sills V had an unprecedented amount of solid outings this year. He racked up at least 116 receiving yards and two touchdowns in four contests in 2017. If not for the red zone threat of Sills V, Grier would not have had such a productive season behind center.

West Virginia could have the first player since current Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams in 2014, to haul in 20 touchdown passes in a single season. Utah has been prone to giving up some big passing plays this year.
