Army Football: 3 takeaways from comeback win over Navy
By Zach Bigalke
On a snowy Saturday in Philadelphia, Army football won its second straight against Navy. What did we learn about the two service academies?
On Saturday, Army and Navy met once again in Philadelphia with the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy on the line. Squaring off for the 118th time, the Black Knights jumped out to an early lead before Navy gained an advantage before halftime. On a snowy day, two run-heavy teams made little pretense of passing the ball.
The Midshipmen looked ripe to regain supremacy on the gridiron among service academies. But a late surge by the Black Knights gave West Point a chance to celebrate for a second straight season. Army scored first and Army scored last to prevail 14-13 on the final day of the 2017 regular season. Navy had a chance to win on the final play, but Bennett Moehring’s 48-yard field goal attempt flew just wide.
With the win, Army is in position to win 10 games for the first time since 1996. All they have to do is beat San Diego State in the Armed Forces Bowl later this month. Navy could slip to its first losing season since 2011 if the lose the Military Bowl against Virginia on their home turf in Annapolis.
What did we learn from the last game before bowl season begins? Here are three takeaways from Army’s second straight win in the long rivalry series.
