Landing one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC to transfer to join Michigan football helps the Wolverines contend in the Big Ten for years to come.

Michigan Football got some great news on Dec. 11 with the announcement of Ole Miss sophomore quarterback transferring to join the Wolverines. Head coach Jim Harbaugh now has a pipeline of quarterbacks to which he can build his offense around for years to come. Freshman Brandon Peters went down with an injury near the end of the regular season, but he could be the answer for Michigan in 2018.

However, landing Patterson is huge for the Wolverines. When he was healthy this year, Patterson led the Rebels offense to some fantastic scoring outputs. He also took sophomore wide receiver A.J. Brown to new heights. Brown should be a future first round pick, possibly even top-5, when he decides to declare for the NFL Draft. Patterson could be in the same boat as Brown.

Patterson is a former five-star recruit. He was also one of the most highly touted commits in the history of Ole Miss football. The sanctions that hit the Rebels last week caused the transfer of a lot of the younger players on the team, including Patterson.

This news does not come as much of a surprise since Patterson had heavy restrictions in terms of transferring to another SEC school. Michigan looked like the heavy favorite to land Patterson as soon as reports came out that Ole Miss allowed him to openly explore transfer options.

Michigan could use a boost under center after a disappointing eight win regular season. The Wolverines face the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1. That should help determine what kind of momentum Michigan has entering the 2018 campaign.

Assuming he’s granted the waiver to play immediately here are five realistic expectations for Shea Patterson with the Michigan Wolverines in his first year with the program
