The fifth quarter this week covers the early signing period. Here are my five takeaways from college football’s early signing week in 2017.

Note: In the video I said Kirby Smart was a first-year head coach — I’m sorry, that’s wrong.

The early signing period is the newest invention from the NCAA and the college football world had to adjust its schedule accordingly. Gone was the buildup to that exciting day in February and now smack dab in between Hanukkah and Christmas cheer, and bowl games, comes early signing period.

Of course there were winners and losers of day one and while Miami and Georgia cleaned up, Florida State and Kirk Herbstreit managed to bottom out.

With these early signees faxing in their letters, coaches were either celebrating or hush-hush. News around college football was Kent State finally finding a head football coach in former Syracuse Orange offensive coordinator Sean Lewis.

Another new hire, Herm Edwards, is making news for the Sun Devils’ terrible recruiting class and loss of both coordinators which wasn’t supposed to happen. The top-10 recruiting classes came in as all national powers, with all four College Football Playoff teams making the cut, and eight of the programs are headed by defensive-minded coaches. Dabo Swinney and Urban Meyer had a little negative recruiting drama, and the Bulldogs came out as the top-rated recruiting class per 247Sports.
