San Diego State vs. Army: 5 bold predictions for Armed Forces Bowl
By Zach Bigalke
3. The Armed Forces Bowl will see turnovers in both directions
San Diego State’s offense lost just 11 turnovers over the course of the 2017 regular season. Army was even better, coughing up the ball just nine times heading into the bowl game. But turnovers come when a team gets complacent about its ability to hold onto the football, and both offenses are facing defenses hungry to make their mark.
The Aztecs have been great at generating turnovers in recent years. 2017 was, if anything, a bit of a letdown for San Diego State. The secondary picked off 13 passes, which is impressive enough to rank in the top 35 nationally. But after following in the footsteps of past rosters that racked up 23 interceptions in 2015 and 26 interceptions in 2016. The first was tied for second in the FBS, while last year’s unit led the country in takeaways through the air.
So this year’s team will be hungry to keep a streak of seasons with at least 20 takeaways alive for a fourth straight year. They need just one more turnover to get there after reaching 19 during the regular season.
But San Diego State might get a bit complacent and overconfident on offense. We could see the Aztecs rack up plenty of yardage but try to get cute in the red zone against the Black Knights. That could lead to a few Christian Chapman interceptions to keep from putting up more points on the scoreboard.
