San Diego State and Army met in Fort Worth for the 15th edition of the Armed Forces Bowl. Neither team was really interested in throwing the ball, instead relying on two of the top rushing attacks in the country. It was a wild game that opened the long holiday weekend with several momentum shifts.
Even though the two teams largely kept things on the ground, it still ended up a barnburner between the Black Knights and Aztecs. For the first time since 2012, a service academy came away victorious in the Armed Forces Bowl. Army pulled out a 42-35 comeback victory over the Aztecs thanks to a late two-point conversion followed by a fumble return for a touchdown on a last-gasp lateral play.
Victory for Jeff Monken’s team means that the 2017 Army team won 10 games in a season for the first time since 1996. The backbone of the best season in over two decades, a group of Army seniors that included quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw will go out as one of the most decorated classes at West Point in the modern era.
