Only one team looked motivated to play in the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile. Here’s what we learned from the Appalachian State shutout of Toledo.
More: Complete 2017-2018 bowl schedule
With the Dollar General Bowl serving as the prime-time game in Mobile, a fan theoretically could have seen two bowl games in a single day. Alabama hosted both the Yellowhammer State’s last two bowl games on the second Saturday of bowl season, with the Birmingham Bowl early on the schedule and the Dollar General Bowl in the evening. In between, the Armed Forces Bowl featured in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ostensibly, a fan might have had time to drive between Legion Field and Ladd-Peebles Stadium for all of both games. More realistically, you could probably catch about six quarters of live football at best.
Appalachian State came out on Saturday in the Dollar General Bowl and clobbered Toledo out of the gates. The Mountaineers racked up over 200 rushing yards in the first half as they rolled out to a 20-0 lead. The blowout continued into the second half, as Appalachian State’s defense continued to clamp down on the Rockets and the offense continued gaining good yardage. By the end of the festivities, Scott Satterfield’s squad walked off the field with a 34-0 victory.
After the lone blowout of Saturday action, what did we really learn from the Dollar General Bowl this season? Appalachian State certainly looked motivated for the final game of 2017. MAC champion Toledo didn’t look nearly as interested. Keep reading for three takeaways from the final game on the December 23 schedule.
