3. Bulldogs have a more explosive offense

One of the most impressive performances put on display during the Rose Bowl was the dominant running of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Not only were the effective, each averaged more than 10 yards per carry, but they also padded those numbers with huge explosive plays. Alabama’s defense is superb, but it all it would take for the Bulldogs to pierce the armor is a few well-timed big moments.

Big plays and long touchdowns are nothing new for the Bulldogs. Georgia had three scoring plays of longer than 35 yards against Oklahoma. Granted, the Sooners’ defense doesn’t hold a candle to the Alabama’s unit, but that spark extends well beyond the Rose Bowl.

Georgia ranks eighth in the nation with 86 plays of 20+ yards. That leads most of the SEC by a wide margin. Pass-happy Missouri was second with 82 such plays. Alabama ranked fifth with 66 such plays. Georgia had 20 more explosive running plays more than Alabama even though both squads have an abundance of talent in their respective backfields.

Alabama has allowed fewer explosive plays than any other defense in the nation. Yet, they haven’t been perfect. They allow just shy of three such plays allowed per game. Georgia is going to have at least three. If they make them count the Tide could be in trouble.
