College football fans want to see good football. Could some of the nation’s better quarterbacks be on the bench next season because of NCAA transfer rules?

The nation witnessed the birth of a star when Tua Tagovailoa took over for Jalen Hurts in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The young Hawaii passer erased a 13-point halftime deficit and put on such an impressive performance that  Saban has a decision to make: who is going to be his starting quarterback next season?

This story never ends with a group hug and choruses of kumbaya. Why should it? Both Alabama quarterbacks, like others in similar situations, believe they have what it takes to be the starer. The result of this power struggle is a transfer.

Georgia’s Jacob Eason, after being injured early in the season, lost his job to freshman Jake Fromm. He’s transferring to Washington and will sit out the 2018 season. Transferring from Michigan is graduate transfer Wilton Speight, who lost his job to injury and two different passers. Presumably taking his place, at least in 2019, is Ole Miss transfer Shea Patterson.

The loser of the Alabama isn’t likely to hang around. Texas A&M has a pair of highly regarded sophomores, Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel. Will they both stick around on the same roster? That’s highly unlikely. The same goes for Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger at Texas. Arizona’s Khalil Tate has voiced his displeasure at the possible hiring of Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo. Will he be on the way out if Niumatalolo gets hired?

Each of those quarterbacks has or will find a place to play their college football. The talent is there, they just didn’t make the cut on their current roster. Is it really in the best interest of college football to not get to see most of them play in 2018 because their sitting on the bench because of NCAA transfer rules?
