Virginia Tech’s running back, Travon McMillian, announced on Saturday that he will transfer to Colorado his senior season.

Virginia Tech’s loss will be Colorado’s gain. Phillip Lindsay, one of the Buffaloes’ most productive running backs, has declared for the 2018 NFL Draft. That leaves a pretty big hole that Colorado needs to fill, and Virginia Tech’s Travon McMillian should do the job nicely.

Under the NCAA graduate transfer rule, McMillian can play out his remaining year of eligibility at any school he chooses. McMillian chose Colorado.

McMillian was great at Virginia Tech early in his career, but his rushing yards in the 2016 season fell off a bit. He rushed for 1,042 yards and seven scores as a freshman. That’s not to say the guy is a slacker, though — in three seasons, he racked up 2,152 yards and 16 touchdowns. McMillian hasn’t played as much once Justin Fuente took over coaching duties from Frank Beamer. Fuente is known for his zone run plan, and Travon’s speedy, sharp-cut style didn’t mesh well with Fuentes’ design.

At Virginia Tech, McMillian was second after DeShawn McClease, but he will be one of the leaders at Colorado. Assistant coach Darian Hagan is great at evolving the rushers under his tutelage. So good luck to Travon McMillian with his new team. He should be a great fit with the Buffs.
