The NFL is holding a celebration for UCF football this Sunday. If I were Nick Saban, I’d be a little ticked.

This Sunday, the NFL is having a celebration honoring UCF’s undefeated football season. The Knights will walk out onto the field to be honored at the Pro Bowl in Orlando.

In a quote from the school’s website, “When the NFL’s brightest stars take the field at the 2018 Pro Bowl in Orlando, they will be joined by UCF’s football team. In the wake of its national championship, undefeated season, the UCF Knights will be honored by the NFL following the first quarter of the game.”

Matt Shapiro, events director for the NFL, added: “When we thought about UCF and the amazing season they had going undefeated and their bowl game win, we thought there was really no better way, especially in the city of Orlando, to do something for that college celebration of football than to honor the UCF team in stadium on Sunday.”

I guess it’s appropriate considering the mission of the Pro Bowl, which is to honor football on all levels, but if I were Alabama, I’d be steamed. Again, I want to reiterate that UCF’s season was great and being undefeated is awesome. Nonetheless, I have not seen any other football team make this big a fuss about a title that they didn’t freaking win.

UCF needs to calm down. They paid the coaches championship bonuses for Pete’s sake and had a parade.

I mean, look at the 1990 Georgia Tech football team. They had to share the national title with Colorado. Now I hate to belabor this point, but Tech had a tough schedule that year, too. They finished the season by walloping Nebraska, which was a much bigger deal in the 1990s, believe me.

Florida State had an undefeated season in 2013 and they had to play Maryland, Clemson and Miami, all of whom were ranked, thank you very little. So, yes, UCF deserves accolades for an incredible season, it does not deserve a national title.

The NFL seems to agree. As Shapiro stated, “I think we’re going to focus on their undefeated season. I don’t know that we’re going to get into the business of labeling them national champions. But we’re just excited to honor them and celebrate them.”
