Much has been said about Texas A&M football‘s losses on offense. However, the replacement for safety Armani Watts is also in question. Who will it be?

When you think about a true Aggie, the first thought is Armani Watts. The senior safety has been one of the most important players in the Aggies secondary. He made his presence known early and often. Due to a rib injury keeping him from the Belk Bowl, Texas A&M saw early and often what a difference a veteran safety makes.

From the looks of it, it seems he had quite a bit of fun at the Senior Bowl though. From dancing with “Cuppy” to picking off passes, Watts had quite the weekend. He will make an NFL team very lucky over the draft period for sure.

The question for Texas A&M now though, is who takes his spot? There are two players that Jimbo Fisher should be counting his lucky stars will be on his roster in 2018.

Donovan Wilson

This fifth year senior will be the most important part of the Aggie defense in 2018. He was expected to be part of what was at the start of the season considered one of the best safety duos in the country. However, a foot injury against UCLA quickly sidelined him for the season.

On the positive side though, this makes 2018 his year. He will be the focus and the leader of this unit. That will be extremely important when a team is going through such a drastic turn around like the Aggies are. Look for his name to come over the loud speakers quite a bit in the coming season.

Derrick Tucker

In Wilson’s absence in 2017, a few true freshman got to shine on the field. One of those was safety Derrick Tucker. He has made a name for himself as a hard hitter and a kid that gets things done. He had the game of his career against Ole Miss, where his pick-six was the difference in a win and a loss.

I picture Tucker, along with Wilson, being the Aggies starting safeties for 2018. There may be a little rotation through some other kids on the roster and incoming recruits, but these two are the best options to replace the production of Armani Watts.
