SEC Football: Power ranking every coach in the SEC
By Shelbie Warr
13. Jeremy Pruitt and Tennessee
Oh, Tennessee. Their coaching search was perhaps one of the most entertaining to follow. On Saturday Nov. 11, the Volunteers were slaughtered by Missouri. A day later, head coach Butch Jones was dismissed from his position and the coaching search began. Defensive line coach Brady Hoke was named interim head coach for the final two games of the season, which went about as well as the rest of the season did for the Vols.
Then-athletic director John Currie held a press conference in which he promised “an exhaustive search” to bring Tennessee back to winning championships. The came the rumors of Jon Gruden taking the head coaching position. That was over quicker than it began.
Then, it seemed that the Vols had reached an agreement with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. That was not well received by students and fans due to his connections to the Sandusky era at Penn State. After quite a few protests online and on campus, that was quickly disposed of.
Mike Gundy. Jeff Brohm. Dave Doeren. No one wanted the job. John Currie was fired, Phillip Fulmer took over. Names like Tee Martin and Les Miles circulated.
On Dec. 9, Alabama’s defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt finally said yes and took the job. While he has been successful as an assistant, his lack of head coaching experience sets him at number 13 on my coaches power rankings.
