SEC Football: Power ranking every coach in the SEC
By Shelbie Warr
9. Joe Moorhead and Mississippi State
Mississippi State was sitting pretty and happy in their coaching position. Then, Dan Mullen left for Florida and everything got out of whack for the Bulldogs. In February of 2017, Mullen signed an extension through 2020. In November, he was signing with Florida as their new head coach. To make matters worse, they were freaking out about the graphic leg injury quarterback Nick Fitzgerald sustained during the Egg Bowl.
To say it wasn’t a great time to be a Bulldog is an understatement. Overall, fans seem somewhat pleased with the hiring of Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead. I mean, he coached Saquon Berkly and that kid almost won the Heisman. How bad could it be? Penn State players seem pretty high on him, quotes from them are shown in the tweet below.
Success has followed Moorhead wherever he goes. It is one of the many reasons that fans are excited to see what he has in store for them in 2018. His only head coaching experience, however, comes from four years at the FCS school Fordham. It is safe to say that the SEC is a little different from that.
His success as an offensive coordinator as of late puts him just inside the top 10, but his lack of FBS head coaching experience puts him at number nine for me. It will be interesting though to see what he does with the likes of Nick Fitzgerald and company in 2018.
