Washington State football under Mike Leach are coming off their best season since 2003. Here are five early bold predictions about Wazzou for 2018.
The Washington State Cougars are coming off a nine-win season and a major upset of the USC Trojans which Mike Leach called “Like Woodstock” in regards the vibe in Pullman. However, WSU once again lost some head scratchers and failed to win the Apple Cup.
Beating USC was amazing, but losing to Cal 37-3 and Arizona 58-37 were disappointing smudges on an exciting 2017 season in Pullman, WA. Mike Leach now has to replace the school’s record-setting quarterback in Luke Falk and replace their wunderkind defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.
The Cougars biggest challenge is a rough schedule stretch after their bye week where they face Oregon, Stanford, Cal, Colorado, Arizona and Washington six weeks in a row. That’s a gauntlet especially with Oregon’s speed, Stanford’s power, Cal’s defense improving, Arizona’s elite quarterback in Khalil Tate, and then the well oiled machine that is Chris Petersen’s Washington Huskies program.
The Cougars do however have a chance to break in a new defense and a new quarterback with four “easy” games starting the season in Wyoming, San Jose State and Eastern Washington before facing the Trojans down in Los Angeles.
