With 2018 National Signing Day approaching, who are the top five remaining recruiting targets for Georgia football and Kirby Smart?

If you’re looking for a program on the rise, look no further than the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart has turned things around quickly after Mark Richt’s departure, but there really wasn’t a ton that needed to be improved. Georgia was a contender every year under Richt, but he could never get over that hump.

With Smart at the helm, the Bulldogs made the College Football Playoff for the first time in 2017 and won the SEC title. They’re getting over the hump with great coaching and equally as impressive recruiting. That’s what happens when your home state is a gold mine for elite recruits.

Who are Georgia’s top five remaining targets for 2018 National Signing Day?

One of the more underrated recruits in the state of Georgia has to be Caleb Johnson. The three-star defensive end from nearby Columbus stands about 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 250 pounds. He has the perfect size for a weak-side defensive end, but doesn’t quite have the star rating of other top prospects in the class.

Johnson can, however, he a solid contributor at the next level. He’s ranked the No. 578 overall recruit and 29th-best weak-side defensive end, according to 247Sports. He holds over a dozen offers and there are some top programs still trying to court him.

Potential suitors include Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee. It’s obvious he’s looking to play in the SEC but will he stay home?

Florida seems like the favorite to land him with Auburn a close second, but Georgia is playing the underdog role in his recruitment after getting a visit on Jan. 12.
