Iowa State football signed their best recruiting class in program history then got even better news. Kyle Kempt was granted a sixth-year of eligibility.

An Iowa State press release announced that Kyle Kempt was granted a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA. Kempt took his case to the NCAA on the basis of being “run off” at a Oregon State. Kempt then Kempt transferred to Hutchinson Community College. After a brief stint at Hutchinson, Kempt ended up coming to Iowa State as a walk-on.

Kyle Kempt went from walk-on third-string quarterback to Cyclone legend after leading Iowa State to a Liberty Bowl victory. Iowa State looked to have a quarterback for the next few years in Jacob Park before he took a leave of absence from the team. Kempt ended up earning the starting nod over Zeb Noland and played like a seasoned veteran.

In Kempt’s first start of the season he guided the Cyclones to a victory over third-ranked Oklahoma. Iowa State then rattled four straight wins off including another top-five win over TCU. The win over TCU gave the Cyclones six wins making them bowl-eligible for the first time since 2012. Kempt went from incredible story to Iowa State legend after leading the Cyclones to a 21-20 victory over Memphis.

Kempt passed for 1,787 yards, 15 touchdowns and only three interceptions in nine games this past season. Being granted a sixth-year of eligibility solves plenty of uncertainty for the Cyclones at the quarterback position.

Assuming Kyle Kempt will be put on scholarship, the Cyclones now have five scholarship quarterbacks heading into the 2018 season. The starting job will be Kempt’s to lose heading into Spring and beyond.

The once walk-on and third-string quarterback is now a Cyclone legend. This coming season will allow Kempt to continue to cement his legacy as an Iowa State football legend.
