Running Backs

Starting running back: Dexter Williams

Backups: Tony Jones Jr., Jahmir Smith

Following workhorse Josh Adams’ announcement that he would be declaring for the NFL draft, it was clear that there was much work to be done in terms of revamping a limited running back group. However, that need became much more glaring following the dismissals of running backs Deon McIntosh and C.J. Holmes.

The Irish were down to only two backs at one point, with those two backs being incoming senior Dexter Williams and incoming junior Tony Jones Jr. Williams, one carry short of qualifying as the nation’s leader in yards per carry last season, will likely be the starter in a thunder and lightning approach alongside Jones.

The Irish also have a few 2018 recruits who could vie for the number three spot, most notably running back Jahmir Smith. Smith is the most polished runner in the group, but classmates Tariq Bracy and C’Bo Flemister could give him a run for his money as well.
