Stanford landed one major coup on National Signing Day. Several schools were battling for the signature of pro-style quarterback Tanner McKee. David Shaw’s staff is the one that hauled in McKee’s National Letter of Intent.
The quarterback will be headed on an LDS mission, meaning that he will be gone from Palo Alto for two seasons. If things play out to plan, McKee could step in as a mature 20-year-old freshman right as K.J. Costello is on his way out at quarterback.
Of course, that will require beating out another four-star recruit brought in at quarterback in this recruiting class. Stanford also targeted and landed Jack West, another pro-style quarterback out of Alabama. The Cardinal snatched two of the top 10 pro-style passers in this year’s class, but only one quarterback can play at a time.
Other than the quarterback position, Stanford brought in just four more offensive players on National Signing Day. Justus Woods and Jay Symonds Jr. could develop into the next dynamic Cardinal tailback-fullback tandem. Either McKee or West will likely be taking snaps from center Trey Stratford by the time they all take the field. And four-star receiver Michael Wilson could become an immediate target for Costello in the passing game in 2018.
Stanford brought in quality players. But they doubled up on similar quarterbacks and stuck to just a few positions of need. It wasn’t a bad National Signing Day for the offense, but it wasn’t more than a C+ day either.
