The 2018 recruiting class is in the books and Texas A&M football looks to be bringing in some gems. Which five incoming freshmen could start?
It’s not easy to start as a true freshman for Texas A&M, but with a new head coach in place, anything is possible. Jimbo Fisher is trying to change the culture in College Station from an annual 7-8 win team to a 10-plus win program.
To do that, he must trust some of his young stars. There is plenty of returning talent at the Aggies’ disposal in 2018, but there are also some true freshman who could have immediate impacts.
Which five 2018 signees could become starters for Fisher and Texas A&M?
With Tanner Schorp and Kelvin Cline both gone, Aaron Hansford is expected to be the starter at tight end in 2018. That job may not be sewn up, though, as early enrollee tight end Jace Sternberger could give him a run for his money.
Being an early enrollee definitely helps, especially when there’s an immediate need for the position. On top of that, Sternberger is a JUCO transfer, so he already has experience at the collegiate level and was ranked the No. 2 tight end and 24th-best recruit at the junior college level, according to 247Sports.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M was part of the 2015 recruiting class out of high school and has added about 30 pounds since then. He is a decent blocker and solid pass-catcher, making him an early starting option for Jimbo Fisher.
The tight ends weren’t utilized heavily last season, as evidenced by a combined 10 catches for 104 yards, but Sternberger could be a regular contributor.
