There are now two open spots at both defensive end positions now that Breeland Speaks and Marquis Haynes are off to bigger and better things. That means James Williams may not be too far off from contending for a starting spot.

Williams is an impressive incoming three-star freshman defensive end from Jackson, Miss., who held just nine offers, but many were from major programs. In fact, he held offers from the likes of Mississippi State, Alabama, Georgia, Louisville, LSU and Tennessee, but chose the Rebels on Dec. 20.

Matt Luke could insert him right away at defensive end with that 6-foot-5, 285-pound frame. He could project as a defensive tackle as well with that wide body, but he is athletic enough to play on the end.

One of the most impressive strengths for Williams is his patience. He doesn’t over-pursue, which makes reversing field nearly impossible for opponents.

Williams is ranked the No. 463 overall recruit and 20th-best strong-side defensive end in the class, according to 247Sports.
