10. Ed Price: 1951-1956

  • Career Record: 33-27-1
  • Awards and Accolades: 1952 & ’53 Southwest Conference Champions

The first coach on the list was the man before Darrell Royal, coach Ed Price spent most of his adult life associated with the University of Texas as he played under coach Clyde Littlefield from 1930 to 1932 and played basketball for Texas from 1931 to 1933. He would return to the school in 1936 as an assistant coach and would remain in that position until 1951, when he was hired as head coach.

Price’s first three years at Texas were very successful as he compiled a 23-7 record and won back-to-back Southwest Conference Championships in 1952 and 1953. The team in 1952 managed to score a Cotton Bowl victory over the Tennessee Volunteers who were led by Hall of Fame Coach, General Robert Neyland.

However, the end of Price’s tenure was the exact opposite of spectacular as it saw the program stumble on the field. He compiled just a 10-19-1 record in his final three seasons, including a 1-9 record in his final year, which also had Texas finishing winless in the Southwest Conference for the first time in school history. Price resigned following the 1956 season but remained at the university in an academic role.
