9. Berry Whitaker: 1920-1922

  • Career Record: 22-3-1
  • Awards and Accolades: 1920 Southwest Conference Champions

The coach ranking number nine on the list is Barry Whitaker. Whitaker played his college football for the Indiana Hoosiers from 1911 to 1913. Upon his graduation from Indiana, he became head football coach of Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin for three years from 1914 to 1916. Whitaker then became an assistant coach at Texas for one season in 1919 and became head coach following the departure of William Juneau.

Whitaker was named head football coach and head basketball coach in 1920. Throughout his three seasons as head coach of the football team, he compiled an impressive 22-3-1 record, including a 9-0 season in 1920 which brought the Longhorns a Southwest Conference Championship. His lone year as head basketball coach concluded with a 10-6 record.

However, Whitaker would resign following the 1922 season, citing that coaching had taken a toll on his physical health. Following his coaching days, he helped establish one of the first collegiate intramural programs in America. He remained director of intramural sports at Texas until his retirement in 1960.
