10. Dean Cromwell: 1909-1910, 1916-1918

Career Record: 21-8-6

A name that is very familiar to USC athletics is Dean Cromwell. Cromwell starred in four different sports during his time at Occidental College including football, baseball, cycling and track from 1899 to 1902. Upon graduation, he chose to stay out of college athletics for a few years until USC came calling in the fall of 1909.

Cromwell was hired as head football and track coach in 1909 and as head man on the gridrion, compiled a 10-1-3 record in his first two seasons. However, USC dropped football following the 1910 season. Cromwell remained head track coach until he was brought back as head football coach following the reinstatement of the program in 1916, compiling 11-7-3 record in his final three years before stepping down to become full-time track coach.

Following his departure from the football program, Cromwell became a household name when it came to track and field in the United States. He remained the track coach for USC until his retirement in 1948. He also coached track and field in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1948 London Olympics.
