Fans of Texas A&M football got a glimpse into what could be a promising future for the program in their April 14 spring game at Kyle Field.
Texas A&M football had their spring game on April 14, during the course of a huge slate around the college football world on the same day. The SEC itself had some big games to watch on April 14, including the Mizzou Tigers and Florida Gators. We do still have to wait another week to see what happens with the giants around the SEC like the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs.
For now, the Aggies showed that they’re taking some real steps in the right direction in just a few months under first-year head coach Jimbo Fisher. The offense looked completely different in the spring game, with players like JUCO transfer tight end Jace Sternberger and wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon taking center stage.
All eyes also fell on the quarterback competition between the pair of rising sophomores in Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel. For all intents and purposes, Starkel should have a huge leg up in this battle after the way he rounded out the 2017 campaign, especially in the Belk Bowl.
However, a new coach means some big shakes up on the offensive side of the ball. Mond was going to get a fair and square shot at winning the starting job. Even though Starkel seems like a great fit with the Texas A&M offense, he’s still got a long way to go.
And, Mond fits the picture of quarterbacks more similar to what Jimbo had with the Florida State Seminoles. Fisher took some big names like Jameis Winston, E.J. Manuel, and even Deondre Francois to new heights. That is as long as Francois works out this year.
In terms of the Texas A&M situation, the good news is that both Starkel and Mond looked great in the spring game. Mond racked up multiple touchdowns, with not interceptions. Meanwhile, Starkel led a great pace for the Aggies and also had more touchdown passes than picks.

This is going to be one of the tightest quarterback battles in the nation, and with good reason. Starkel is not that far ahead of Mond in his development and overall skill set. Mond could be a great fit for this offense and guide the Aggies to a bright future.
