Backups: Ian Book, Phil Jurkovec
After going 7-1 in his first eight starts, things were looking up for both Brandon Wimbush and the Irish as a whole. However, you know what happens next if you kept track of Notre Dame’s season. Wimbush would proceed to go 1-2 over his next three starts, falling 41-8 against Miami before dropping another one in a 38-20 loss to Stanford a couple of weeks later.
Notre Dame fans were quick to call for sophomore Ian Book, but even he had his struggles at times. However, it was Book who ended Notre Dame’s season on a good note, taking down LSU by a score of 21-17 in the 2018 Citrus Bowl. Nevertheless, Kelly is confident in what he’s seen out of Wimbush this spring and is convinced in his abilities as a starter moving forward.

Many see both Wimbush and Book as stop-gap quarterbacks while incoming freshman Phil Jurkovec is groomed to be the next great thing at Notre Dame. While I’m certainly optimistic for his future, it’s worth noting that Wimbush himself was a higher-rated prospect than Jurkovec. While Jurkovec may lead the Irish to bigger and better things, it’s important to enjoy these days too.
