Room to grow is still there for Texas A&M football leading into the summer. How will the Aggies handle the post-spring game hype?

Texas A&M football is being talked about as a potential dark horse College Football Playoff contender out of the SEC West at this moment. What led to that was a nice outing for the Aggies at their annual spring game at Kyle Field earlier this month. However, the Aggies still have a ways to go until they can claim the status of dark-horse playoff contenders.

The reason behind all this change for the Aggies too is first-year head coach Jimbo Fisher, and all his changes to the Texas A&M offense recently. Since the offense is possibly the most important piece to the puzzle for the Aggies finding more success in 2018 than they did under Kevin Sumlin in past years, Fisher is focusing heavily on it.

If the Aggies are to contend nationally this year, it all starts with their play in the SEC slate. The SEC West is set to be as good as ever this season with extremely strong rosters returning for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, and LSU Tigers. Even the Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Arkansas Razorbacks won’t be easy to knock off in 2018.

A realistic expectation for the Aggies this season is to finish around the nine win mark, which would be two more than they saw in 2017. Texas A&M does have the potential to make things very interesting in the SEC West, with a coach at the helm with a prowess like Fisher.

There’s a lot of excitement for all the changes happening around College Station, and with good reason. Fisher is a great head coaching pull after the departure of Sumlin (who is now with the Arizona Wildcats).

Things do have to slow down in the minds of both the players and coaches. If they let the hype get to them, an early season non-conference matchup with the reigning ACC Champion Clemson Tigers could hit them hard. We’ll find out very early where this Aggies squad is at mentally.

Moreover, there’s still a lot to decide for Fisher before the 2018 campaign officially kicks off. He has a tight quarterback battle on his hands between two young guys in rising sophomores Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel. He can’t let them get too in their heads either.
