NFL Mock Draft 2018: Complete 7-Round projections
The Oakland Raiders have a dangerous front seven, but their secondary leaves much to be desired. They silver and black allowed 241.1 yards per game through the air last season, seventh worst in the NFL. Their five interceptions was by far the worst mark in the league. In fact, there were 11 individual players with at least five interceptions of their own last year.
Florida State safety Derwin James can deliver in both areas of lack. He’s an immediate asset in the passing game, but he also brings a game-breaking ability which will lead to a bounce back in the turnover department.
How good is James? His former teammated and current NFL cornerback Jalen Ramsey had high praise for the versatile defender: “Derwin is strong safety, free safety, linebacker and defensive end. Derwin is a freak. He can do pretty much everything.”
James is most comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage, but he’s able to play all over the field. He was used in a variety of ways at Florida State, but makes the most sense at strong safety for the Raiders long-term. However, playing him at the free safety slot over veteran Reggie Nelson will draw some consideration as well.
