Wisconsin football will be losing one of their quarterbacks as sophomore Karé Lyles announced he will be leaving the program.

The Wisconsin Badgers will be a little thinner at the quarterback position in 2018 as redshirt sophomore quarterback Karé Lyles announced via Twitter he would be leaving the program to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The once rated three-star quarterback out of Scottsdale, Arizona is a part of a family connection with the Badgers as he father Kevin played quarterback and tight end for the team back in the early 90s. Karé redshirted after joining the program in 2016, but did not see a single snap in 2017 as he was the No. 3 option behind Alex Hornibrook and Jack Coan.

While a hit to the Badgers, it makes sense that Lyles will be looking elsewhere after Hornibrook solidified himself as the starter for the next two seasons and with Coan earning backup a year ago, there was unlikely any playing time on the horizon for Karé in Madison.

Karé’s younger brother Kayden will remain with the team, at least for the time being. The offensive lineman out of Middleton, Wisconsin joined the team in 2017. With the family tradition and the more pressing need for linemen, it is unlikely the Badgers will see Kayden depart.

The move opens up the spot for the Badgers’ third string quarterback next season, which is likely to go to redshirt freshman Danny Vanden Boom. The quarterback situation for the Badgers is all but set for the next two seasons as Hornibrook is the clear-cut No. 1, but the position will open up nicely again with big-time recruit Graham Mertz coming in to Madison in 2019.

Karé Lyles’ announcement came following one of the Badgers’ spring scrimmages in which he completed five of eight passes for 108 years with a touchdown and interception.
