Few programs across the nation have a bigger commit in their 2020 recruiting class than Notre Dame football has with talented quarterback Drew Pyne.

Notre Dame football picked up a huge commitment, on April 16, for their 2020 recruiting class in four-star pro-style quarterback Drew Pyne. It’s very early to be evaluating this type of prospect for the Fighting Irish, but he’ll be on campus before we know it.

As the first commit overall in the 2020 class for Notre Dame, Pyne could be a staple of the group once that National Signing Day comes around in less than two years. Or, Pyne could join the current trend of players officially signing their Letter of Intent during the Early Signing Period, that started last year.

Moreover, the Irish had to work for this quarterback recruit. Altogether, Pyne had 28 offers to a ton of other big name schools around the country. Notre Dame plucked this New Canaan, Conn., native away from other top notch programs such as the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas Longhorns.

Having variety in the mix is a huge part of the intrigue to the current quarterback battle for the Irish. It’s likely that current incoming freshman dual-threat quarterback Phil Jurkovec is either the starter, or vying for that role, by the time that Pyne arrives on campus. However, Pyne has a more reliable arm than Jurkovec does, but less speed and agility to escape the pocket.

However, Pyne does have the interesting ability to make some strong throws on the run. It’s hard to tell if his ability to get outside the pocket comes from less than stellar competition, or just his speed itself. He does have a very unique skill set that he brings to the table in South Bend.

That’s just part of the diverse options that head coach Brian Kelly now has to work with in the future. He, along with Notre Dame assistant Tommy Rees, helped to secure this huge commitment for the program. As only a sophomore in high school currently, the ultra accurate and potent Pyne has a ton of room to grow before he arrives for Notre Dame.
