Last year there wasn’t much suspense leading up to the draft. Myles Garrett was the slam dunk number one pick and Mitchell Trubisky was going to be the first quarterback off the board. Sure enough, when it came time for the picks to be made those longstanding suspicions came to pass.
2018 promises to be nothing like that at all. Not only is the first pick still in limbo, so is the identity of the first quarterback. The top 10 is a mix of possibilities and scenarios, and that has given way to plenty of rumors. Which ones are true and which ones are simply nonsense? Here are six rumors worthy of clarification.
1. The Browns won’t draft Sam Darnold or Josh Allen at No.1
The Cleveland Browns have never been known to be the Fort Knox of NFL franchises. However, they’ve altered the public’s perception of their franchise significantly during this draft cycle. It’s rare for their to be much uncertainty at all when it comes to who will be the No. 1 overall pick, but it’s draft day and the Browns have kept everyone guessing.
Look at ten different mock drafts. Seven of them have the Browns selecting Sam Darnold, the presumed favorite, and three more have Josh Allen mocked to the Cleveland. None of them are projecting the Browns will take anyone else with that pick.
The truth is this has been a two-horse race for a long time. If the Browns do depart from what most media expect it will be to select Allen over Darnold, not anyone else.
