Scouting Report. 2. player. Pick Analysis. DT. Round 1, No. 17 overall. Da'Ron Payne. 13

There is defensive talent all over the draft this year, mostly due to Alabama. He has the right build for the position at 6-foot-2 and a whopping 300 pounds, but he has the athleticism to move that bulk around.

Da’Ron Payne can play a variety of techniques, from zero to three, and Los Angeles needs someone with his versatility desperately. Payne would give the team some impact against both the run and pass.

Payne’s performance at the NFL combine showed that he can rush the passer, and he did the 40-yard dash at terrifying speed for someone of his size. He is outstanding at defending against the run and the Chargers need someone who can stop the run. Payne had 53 tackles, one sack an interception, a fumble recovery and a touchdown. He checks all of the boxes for the Chargers — there is really no downside to this pick for Los Angeles.
