The San Francisco 49ers needed to bolster their offensive line in front of Jimmy Garoppolo and they did just that in the NFL draft with Mike McGlinchey.

Mike McGlinchey is a mammoth of a prospect at offensive tackle and there was some speculation about who would be the first lineman chosen. The first was from Notre Dame, but it wasn’t McGlinchey as he went three picks after his teammate, Quenton Nelson.

However, McGlinchey was the first tackle chosen and the biggest guy picked to this point at 6-foot-7 and 309 pounds. His size makes him a perfect fit on the 49ers offensive line — not that he wouldn’t be a good fit on any line. He will be the perfect protector of Jimmy Garoppolo under center.

You’ll notice teams like the 49ers and Colts which have young quarterbacks are looking to bolster their offensive line as to not have any setbacks — especially with the Colts and Andrew Luck.

San Francisco needed offensive line help and while McGlinchey may have been a toss-up for the first tackle chosen, he was the right pick.

McGlinchey’s size and strength make him tough to penetrate, but he needs to work on his footwork and speed with those quick edge rushers. That could be his biggest problem at the next level.

San Francisco has to feel good about the selection of McGlinchey as he has the potential to slide into that starting spot right away and have an impact. He is strong enough to hold off NFL talent, but that speed may cause some issues.
