NFL Draft 2018: Packers boost secondary with Jaire Alexander
Louisville cornerback Jaire Alexander filled an immediate need for the Green Bay Packers with the 18th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Through two years at Louisville, Jaire Alexander played 23 games and recorded 58 total tackles with six interceptions and 11 passes defended. His third season didn’t live up to his expectations, but his potential was high enough to land him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
The Louisville prospect was considered an early-first round pick before the season began and dropped on draft boards just slightly. The Packers jumped at the opportunity to select him at No. 18 overall.
Alexander played just six games as a junior before forgoing his senior season and avoiding more injuries at the collegiate level. He had just 19 tackles, one interception and four passes defended, but he flashed that potential in his first two seasons.
If he can remain healthy, he’s going to be a staple of Green Bay’s secondary for years to come. The Packers took a slight risk because of his health issues, but he has the talent to be worth that chance.
Green Bay was lacking on the defensive side of the ball in 2017 and ranked No. 23 in the league in passing defense, so this pick makes plenty of sense.

The Packers needed help in the secondary after a mediocre output in 2017 and Alexander may not have been the best available cornerback, but he’s been long considered a first-round talent. In my opinion, the Packers didn’t take a major risk here as Alexander has a bright future.
