The first round of the 2018 NFL Draft was all about the quarterback position. Three teams traded up to get their prospective passers of the future, causing some valuable prospects to slide into the second round.

Christian Kirk to the Arizona Cardinals and Jessie Bates to the Cincinnati Bengals both qualify as honorable mentions, but here are the three best picks of Round 2.

Tight End. player. 54. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. South Dakota State. Dallas Goedert. 3

Pick 17, No. 49 overall

Word broke Friday that legendary Dallas Cowboy tight end Jason Witten was retiring to take a broadcasting job. The news caught the folks in Arlington completely off guard, sending them into full scramble mode in desperate need for a tight end. They didn’t find their relief in Round 2 because the Philadelphia Eagles traded up in front of them to take South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert.

The third tight end off the board, Goedert followed South Carolina’s Hayden Hurst (Round 1, Pick No. 25 overall) and Penn State’s Mike Gesicki (Round 2, Pick. No 42 overall). Goedert isn’t an elite blocker, but that’s not what the Eagles are drafting him to do. The 6-foot-5, 255 pound pass catcher is going to be a red zone threat for the Eagles, filling in for the departed Trey Burton.

The defending Super Bowl champions don’t have many holes on their roster, which gives them the luxury of snagging more weapons for Carson Wentz. Getting to improve the offense while simultaneously putting your rival in a tough position is a win-win.
