Texas A&M football didn’t have a single selection in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Of all the players in this draft class for the Aggies, versatile wide receiver Christian Kirk had the best chance of getting selected in the first round. However, even Kirk had to wait until the second day of the festivities at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, to get his name called.

After the selection of Kirk in the second round, 47th overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the next man up should be standout safety Armani Watts. As one of the most experienced safeties along the Texas A&M defense in 2017, he came up clutch numerous times during the regular season.

Any team that snags Watts gets a versatile safety that can succeed as a starter in his second or third year in the league. It could take him a year to get adjusted to the speed that is commonly seen at the NFL level, but he has the tools necessary to make an impact early in his career.

The safety position becomes thinner when you get closer to day three of the NFL Draft. That’s when teams could look at taking Watts off the board a bit earlier than some would expect. He’s a guy that will provide depth to any secondary that might have a need to be filled immediately.

Considering that Watts would be a reach in the middle rounds of the draft is a complete mistake. A few draft pundits considered Watts one of the most underrated defensive prospects in this class. He could prove that to be true here within the next few years.
