3. Shaquem Griffin gets a draft invitation, but not a Day 2 selection

Shaquem Griffin was a last-minute invite to the NFL Combine and then stole the show. Even though he one has one hand, the UCF linebacker showed out on the bench press and wowed onlookers with a blazing 4.38 40-yard dash. His outing was impressive enough to earn an invitation to the NFL Draft, one of 22 players to travel to Arlington for the event.

He waited patiently as the other blue chip prospects came off the board. By pick No. 59, where Derrius Guice was selected by the Washington Redskins, every other invitee had left the green room.

It was no surprise that Griffin was the last invitee waiting for his name to be called. As a general rule only players projected to go in the first round are asked to attend the draft in person. Some of those players fall to the second round every year, but not many fall further. Shaquem Griffin is going to have to even longer to hear his name called. The UCF linebacker was not selected on Day 2.

For better or worse (often for worse) the NFL values physical traits over everything else. Coaches and front offices believe they can take a player that profiles well and coach him into the player they want him to be. Griffin has the tools to be a starter in the NFL, and he’s going to be a steal early on Day 3.
