Entering the 2018 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys had several key areas of need. The release of Dez Bryant indicated that they might target a wideout to fortify the receiver position. The interior positions on both the offensive and defensive lines were also high priorities.
But perhaps the greatest hole in the Cowboys roster was in its linebacking corps. In the first round on Thursday night, the hosts of the 2018 NFL Draft addressed that need by taking Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch with the 19th overall selection.
After Georgia’s Roquan Smith and Virginia Tech’s Tremaine Edmunds, Vander Esch was the third linebacker selected in the first round this year.
How does Vander Esch fit in Dallas?
Don’t let the fact that Vander Esch played at a Group of Five school shade the perception of this draft pick. The Boise State linebacker was one of the top players at his position in this draft class.
The former Broncos star fills a glaring need for Dallas. Anthony Hitchens left to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. Both Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith have been plagued with injuries. The Cowboys desperately needed some new talent to bolster the front seven.
In Vander Esch the Cowboys got exactly what they needed. He played in a 4-3 system in Boise, and should plug right in to Rod Marinelli’s system. If Jaylon Smith is moved strongside, Vander Esch could start almost immediately.

Vander Esch has been compared to another mid-major linebacking star, Brian Urlacher. He has a high ceiling and looks like a stellar fit for his new team. If he comes anywhere close to that potential, Vander Esch will be a steal.
