Ohio State Football: 5 biggest takeaways from spring 2018
Ohio State has had a strong spring despite poor weather during the annual scrimmage for fans. Here’s what we learned about the 2018 Buckeyes.
Another spring has passed and, like always, the Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the favorites to win the Big Ten title. Urban Meyer has this team playing at a high level and spring ball was a good example of that.
Heading into the 2018 season, though, Ohio State will have to figure out a starter at quarterback as well replacements in the secondary. The Buckeyes do this little thing called ‘reloading’ instead of rebuilding, so that shouldn’t be an issue, but losing four-year starter (with the exception of most of his sophomore year) J.T. Barrett will hurt.
Ohio State has another impressive recruiting class coming in and it looks like this team is primed to contend for yet another national title.
What’d we learn about the Buckeyes this spring?
5. Chase Young is primed for a breakout
Coming to Ohio State as one of the best defensive end recruits in the nation, Chase Young is finally getting his opportunity in 2018. He will be a favorite to crack the starting rotation on the defensive line, and he has all the tools to be a star.
After a strong performance in the spring game, Young looks like the next star for Ohio State on the defensive line. He got after the quarterback early and often during the spring game and probably would have finished with a handful of sacks if hitting quarterbacks was allowed.
Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano had a glowing review of Young following the game, per Colin Hass-Hill of The Lantern.
"“Chase is going to be a really good player — he’s a good player now,” defensive coordinator Greg Schiano said after the Spring Game. “He’s got the potential to be something special. With [defensive line coach Larry Johnson] working with him, I fully expect that to happen.”"
The 6-5, 240-pound end from Maryland has the potential to be great and could have one of those special seasons that puts him on the NFL draft map.
