A lot of discussion will start to fall around why West Virginia football quarterback Will Grier has all the tools to be the top quarterback in 2019.

West Virginia football needs to keep its focus on the upcoming regular season, with so much excitement coming from the fan base. With the passing of the 2018 NFL Draft, a ton of attention has also fallen on the same event coming up the following off-season. There’s always a lot of talk surrounding what the class will look like for the upcoming NFL Draft, and this time around is no different.

The player that should be off the board from the Mountaineers in the 2019 NFL Draft is a rising senior quarterback in Will Grier. West Virginia could always have an early round pick in reigning All-American wide receiver David Sills V. Yet, Grier should be a first round pick when it’s all said and done and Sills V still has something left to prove to NFL scouts.

Grier does have the big time arm and mobility to escape the pocket when needed, that NFL teams look for out of a prototypical quarterback prospect nowadays. He’s not a typical dual-threat quarterback since he doesn’t use his legs enough to qualify in that category. However, he does have sneaky athleticism that opposing defensive coordinators must know about.

The 2019 NFL Draft quarterback class is an intriguing one since there’s not one single prospect that jumps off the board yet. Drew Lock of the Mizzou Tigers and Justin Herbert of the Oregon Ducks would be the other two top quarterbacks likely considered for this class. Grier is similar to both those quarterback prospects in size and skill set, but he could take his team further in 2018 than Oregon or Mizzou.

Having that valuable experience of helping the Mountaineers contend for a Big 12 Championship in 2018 will do nothing but help Grier’s draft stock. If he contends for the Heisman Trophy too, he could see a similar affect to his stock like Baker Mayfield of the Oklahoma Sooners had, before getting drafted by the Cleveland Browns first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

All things considered, the pieces are lining up nicely for Grier to be a top selection in the 2019 NFL Draft. Put a solid productive body of work together this year, and he’ll find himself in the thick of talk surrounding early first round picks.
