With the offseason in full swing at the college level, Big 12 football recruiting is also underway for the 2019 class for prospects like Dontez Fagan.

Any Power Five conference can be a tough place for recruits to find a home with such a high level of competition coming from other high school prospects. And, with the degree to which recruiting is covered now, you’d think that all bases could be covered for all the skilled prospects that deserve respect. Some talented high school prospects still can slip through. Big 12 football recruiting is no different in this regard.

Millwood High School in Oklahoma City, OK, is right in the thick of Big 12 country, and mostly gets recruited by that group of programs. The Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys do their best to own the state on the recruiting trail, and Millwood 2019 defensive back Dontez Fagan hopes to gain the attention of those schools.

Fagan was ranked as a top 40 prospect in Oklahoma for the 2019 recruiting class, by Sooner Scoop (OU’s Rivals’ page). One reason Fagan might be getting overlooked by most recruiting sources is his size, at 5-foot-8, but his athleticism and ball skills should outweigh that factor.

The perspective coming from an underrated Oklahoma City prospect gets a closer look here. Fagan gave us at Saturday Blitz a brief perspective at what his aspirations and influences are for his college career.

Q: There’s a high level of competition at the high school level in Oklahoma, how do you feel that prepares you for the college game?
Fagan: Just gotta keep pushing in grinding to be at the top.

Q: What do you feel is the best part of your game?
Fagan: My press coverage I love to get up tight with a WR.

Q: You mentioned Oklahoma State and Texas as two of your favorite programs, where would you like to land at ideally?
Fagan: Oklahoma St.

Q: Who do you look up to most in the college game now?
Fagan: Bookie Hiles Freshman DB at OU.

The player that Fagan mentions here that he looks up to is a former four-star recruit of the Sooners Brendan Radley-Hiles. You can see some similarities in both skill sets between Fagan and Radley-Hiles.

A head football coach like Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy is known for taking underrated recruits and turning them into well known players in the Big 12. Other Big 12 programs like the Sooners and Texas Longhorns don’t have that same reputation, but both churn out high level talent consistently.

Fagan is a potent Oklahoma product that comes from a high school that has sent some high level prospects to Power Five programs recently. In the 2018 recruiting cycle, Millwood sent three-star defensive tackle Israel Antwine to the Colorado Buffaloes, a former Big 12 program. Fagan could see the same type of path given a solid senior year in the defensive backfield.
