The SEC West isn’t an easy to walk into and win immediately. No matter how much success coach Moorhead found on his stops along the way, there’s no better training than being thrown into the fire.

Mississippi State’s schedule starts off easy enough. The meat of the schedule comes in October when the Bulldogs face the bulk of their divisional opponents. Texas A&M under new head coach Jimbo Fisher is a bit of a wildcard, but drawing the game at home is a plus. If they can get to the Alabama game with one loss or fewer they’ll have a fighting chance at not only an SEC West crown, but their first ever trip to the College Football Playoff.

The Playoff is a tough ask for Moorhead’s first year, but winning two of their three games against Auburn, LSU and Alabama is a more realistic first step. If they can manage that they might be playing for a spot in a New Year’s Six Bowl when they visit Ole Miss for the Egg Bowl.

Ultimately the learning curve of the SEC West will inject a few more bruises than Bulldog fans would like. However, Mississippi State is still set up for another strong season in 2018.

Projection: 9-3 (5-3 SEC)
