Georgia Football: 5 breakout freshmen to watch in 2018
5. Jamaree Salyer
One blue-chip guard out with Wynn, one in, with Jamaree Salyer. The Atlanta product comes to Athens as the tenth best player in the country, and the top guard. He’s well deserving of that hype.
At 6-foot-4, 342 pounds, Salyer is a physically imposing, dominant force up front. He’s shockingly quick and mobile for his size, and knows how to take advantage of that. He’s a one man wrecking crew when pulling across the line, and will fit perfectly in Georgia’s zone running scheme.
Jamaree is an enormously strong interior blocker, which every SEC team needs in a conference with some of the best one-tech tackles in the country. Salyer isn’t a finished product by any means. His weight, while impressive, needs to drop closer to 300. If it doesn’t, he won’t be able to consistently keep up with the pace of college football.
He also needs some technical help. He got away with some sloppy play in high school because of his size, and will have to fix that. Luckily, Georgia’s San Pittman is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country.
If Salyer works in the weight room, eats well, and continues improving his pass protection, he’ll be impossible to keep off the field. With just a few openings on the line, it’ll be tough. However, Salyer has all the tools needed to be the rare starting freshman lineman.
