Michigan State coaches are very excited to get Arizona corner back Brandon Shivers on campus this Thursday for his official visit.
Michigan State is hosting 2019 corner back Brandon Shivers from Scottsdale, Ariz., this Thursday for his official visit that will have him on campus until Saturday. I was able to get an insight into his play and his thoughts leading up to his visit.
Shivers is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound cornerback whose film shows a player who is physical and who loves to play press coverage. He also is comfortable when playing off the line and dropping back in coverage. He has really good length and does a great job using his hands at the line of scrimmage. He shows really quick feet and an ability to change direction while in the back pedal, and makes a play on the ball when it’s in the air. Shivers is a physical corner who loves to tackle — he is definitely a striker from his corner back position.
I asked Shivers, who just completed his junior year at Saguaro High, to break down his game to me. He describes himself as a very aggressive player who is a student of the game. He prides himself on being a lockdown corner. He has been putting in a lot of work in the gym since December and is an even faster, quicker and smarter player now.
New Michigan State defensive backs coach Paul Haynes is the lead recruiter for the Arizona-native. He has developed a good relationship with Haynes ever since he received his offer on May 17th and looks forward to strengthening the relationship with him and the other coaches on his visit, building a strong chemistry with the staff.
I asked Shivers if distance was a factor in his recruitment and he told me that it’s not a major factor for him, if it feels like the right spot. His dad has taught him to chase his dreams no matter where they take him. If he ends up somewhere further away from home like Michigan State, that there are always planes to see each other.
Finding a school that treats its players like family is a major factor Shivers is looking for in his recruitment. He told me his high school program is built on being a close family, and that really appeals to him in his search for the right program for him. He wants a program that wants him the person and the player both, while also understanding it’s a business. He also looks forward to seeing the facilities and campus on his visit, he’s heard they are nice.

Shivers doesn’t have a timeframe for his decision. If he feels like somewhere is the right place for him, he has no problem committing immediately and shutting down his recruitment.
